Snaking runs a steel cable down the lateral with a head on the end that bores through or breaks up whatever is in the way. It is the fastest route from a backed-up house to a working one, it is the cheapest option on the menu, and for a genuine one-off blockage it is all you need. We do a great deal of it and we are not going to talk you into something larger when a cable will solve your problem.
What snaking does well is get flow back. What it does not do is clean the pipe wall or tell you anything about why the line blocked. The cable bores an opening through the obstruction, which is why a line cleared by snaking can block again at the same spot within weeks if the underlying cause is still there. That is the honest limitation, and it is why we run a camera afterwards on any line that has blocked more than once.
On California laterals the cable has particular things to contend with. Bellies, where the pipe has lost grade because the ground beneath it consolidated, hold standing water and catch solids. A cable goes through a belly and clears it, and then the belly fills again, because the belly is a shape problem and no amount of cleaning changes a shape. Offsets at joints, common where expansive clay has worked the line apart, catch the cable itself. Where the camera shows either of those we will tell you that snaking is a temporary measure on your line.
For a first blockage with no history, we come out, cable the line, confirm flow and leave you to get on with your day. In a slab-on-grade home, which covers most of Southern California's housing, the first sign is usually water coming up in a ground-floor shower or the lowest fixture in the house, and that fixture needs clearing before anything else gets used.
Technician insight
Snaking is the most honest service on this list, in the sense that it does exactly one thing and does it cheaply. The failure mode is not technical, it is commercial. A household that calls for a cable clearance twice a year for four years has spent more than a spot repair would have cost and still has the original defect. If we have been to your house twice for the same blockage, we would rather sell you a camera survey than a third cable.

How it works
- 1
Stop the use
First thing on the phone we will tell you to stop running water and using toilets, because every gallon added while the line is blocked has to come up somewhere inside the house.
- 2
Cable from access
We work from the cleanout where there is one. Where there is not, we pull a ground-floor toilet, which is the usual route in slab-on-grade homes.
- 3
Confirm flow
We run water through several fixtures and watch it clear properly, rather than packing up the moment the first toilet flushes.
- 4
Say what we found
If the cable came back with roots on it, or hit a hard stop, or the line felt like it was holding water, you will hear about it and we will tell you whether a camera is worth the money.
Pricing
Flat-rate for a standard residential clearance from an accessible cleanout, quoted before we start.
