Sewer Line Hydro Jetting Across California

High-pressure water scouring that strips a lateral back to its original bore, where the pipe is sound enough to take it.

Hydro jetting pushes a nozzle down the lateral and scours the wall with water at pressure, cutting roots, shearing grease off the pipe and flushing the debris back out. Done on the right pipe it restores the full bore, which is a different outcome from snaking a hole through a blockage. On the wrong pipe it is destructive, and in California the wrong pipe is common enough that we camera first as a matter of course.

The decision turns on material and condition. Sound clay takes jetting well, and most of California's pre-1965 laterals are clay. Cast iron takes it, though in the hard imported-water areas inland the scale may need a cutter head rather than water alone. ABS and PVC are fine. Orangeburg is not, and never is. That bituminised fibre conduit was used widely in the postwar tract boom and has usually already lost wall section and gone oval, so jetting it finishes the job the soil started. Severely cracked clay with separated joints is the other case where we will tell you to stop and look at repair instead.

California gives roots a longer season than most states. There is no hard winter dormancy here, so root regrowth after a cut is faster than a plumber in Pennsylvania would expect. Where the intruding species is a ficus, eucalyptus or California pepper, a jetted line can be back to restricted flow inside a year. We will tell you honestly whether jetting is a repair or a maintenance interval on your particular line, because selling it as permanent when the tree is still there is how customers end up calling someone else next spring.

Grease is the other main target, and it is a bigger share of the work in California than the residential ratio suggests. In the restaurant-dense corridors of San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and Orange County, commercial laterals carry a fat and oil load that coats the pipe wall and cold-hardens. Water at pressure takes that off in a way a cable simply cannot.

Technician insight

The mistake we see most often on California laterals is jetting as a first response to a recurring backup. If a line blocks three times in two years, the jetting is not failing, it is telling you something structural is there holding material up. Usually a belly from ground settlement, or an offset joint catching solids. Jetting clears it each time and the customer pays each time, when one camera survey would have identified a six-foot section worth repairing once.

Sewer Line Hydro Jetting Services We Offer

✓Root-cutting Jetting

Chain or cutter nozzles that shear root mass out of joints, then scour the wall clean so regrowth starts from nothing.

✓Grease and Fat Removal Jetting

Hot or high-volume jetting that lifts hardened grease off the pipe wall, for restaurants and food premises.

✓Scheduled Maintenance Jetting

A set interval on lines with a known recurring cause, sized to your line rather than to a generic annual schedule.

✓Post-repair Clean-out

Jetting after excavation or lining to clear construction debris before the line is signed off.

How it works

  1. 1

    Camera first

We survey before the jetter comes off the truck. If the pipe is Orangeburg or badly separated clay we stop and tell you, rather than jetting it and handing you a bigger problem.

  2. 2

    Match the nozzle

Roots need a cutter, grease needs volume and heat, silt needs a flushing head. One nozzle for everything is why some jetting jobs do not hold.

  3. 3

    Scour the full length

We work the nozzle to the city connection and back, taking the wall clean, rather than punching an opening and calling it done.

  4. 4

    Verify on camera

A second camera pass shows you the restored bore, and shows up anything structural the blockage was hiding.

Pricing

Priced per job on run length and blockage type, quoted in writing after the camera pass.

Sewer Line Hydro Jetting — FAQs

Still have questions? We're happy to talk it through.

(866) 811-8305
+ Will jetting damage my old clay pipe?
Sound clay takes jetting at appropriate pressure without trouble, and most California clay laterals are sound enough. Clay that is already cracked with separated joints is a different matter, which is exactly why we camera before we jet rather than after.
+ Can you jet an Orangeburg line?
No, and nobody should. Orangeburg is a fibre conduit that loses wall section as it ages and deforms out of round. Jetting it accelerates collapse. If the camera shows Orangeburg we will talk to you about replacement or lining instead.
+ How long will jetting last on a line with tree roots?
It depends on the species and how close the tree is. With an aggressive ficus or eucalyptus in the parkway you may be looking at a 12 to 24 month interval. We will give you a realistic figure for your line rather than a generic answer, and if the honest answer is that you need the pipe repaired rather than cleaned, we will say so.
+ Is jetting better than snaking?
For restoring full bore, yes, because it cleans the whole wall rather than boring through the centre of the obstruction. For a single quick clearance on a sound line, snaking is cheaper and often sufficient. The right answer depends on what the camera shows.
+ Do I need to be home?
Someone needs to give us access to the cleanout and to a water supply. Beyond that, no. Call (866) 811-8305 and we will arrange a time, including nights and weekends.
