Roots do not break into sound pipe. They find an existing opening, usually a clay bell joint that soil movement has pulled slightly apart, and then thicken inside the pipe until flow restricts. That sequence matters, because it means root intrusion is almost always a symptom of a joint that has already failed. Cutting the roots restores flow. It does not close the opening they came through.

California's problem species are not the ones plumbers deal with in the eastern states. The Indian laurel fig, planted as a street and parkway tree across Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and the San Fernando Valley, is the most aggressive root intruder in the state, and cities have been removing mature specimens for the damage they do to sidewalks and buried pipe. Eucalyptus, imported in quantity a century ago and now everywhere from the Berkeley Hills to San Diego, carries an enormous water demand. California pepper, liquidambar, jacaranda, magnolia and willow all show up in our camera footage. In the Central Valley, almond and fruit tree roots reach laterals on older rural-edge properties.

There is a liability point worth knowing if you are in Los Angeles. The city does not maintain or reimburse private sewer laterals damaged by parkway trees, and that position has been tested. If a city-planted ficus in the strip in front of your house has crushed your lateral, the repair is still yours to pay for. Burbank and a number of other California cities take the same line. We mention it because customers are frequently surprised, and because it changes whether you spend money on repeated cutting or on fixing the pipe properly.

So we give you both halves of the answer. We cut the roots and get you flowing, and we tell you from the footage whether you are looking at a single failed joint worth a spot repair, a run of separated joints that argues for lining, or a line that is fundamentally fine and just needs cutting on an interval while the tree stays.

Technician insight

When a customer tells us roots keep coming back, the useful question is not which chemical to use, it is how many joints they are entering through. One entry point is a spot repair and the problem is gone for good. Six entry points down a run of hundred-year-old clay means the pipe has reached the end of its life and cutting is just buying time. The camera answers that in twenty minutes and it is the difference between spending money once and spending it every eighteen months.

Sewer Line Root Removal Services We Offer

✓Mechanical Root Cutting

Cable machine with sized cutting heads, working the root mass out of the joint from the inside.

✓Hydraulic Root Cutting

Jetter with chain or cutter nozzle, which shears roots and scours the wall so regrowth restarts from bare pipe.

✓Entry-point Survey

Camera work that finds every joint roots are entering through, so a spot repair targets the right section.

✓Maintenance Cutting Programme

Scheduled cutting at an interval set by your species and site, for lines where the tree is staying.

How it works

  1. 1

    Clear the mass

We cut from the cleanout with blades sized to the pipe, or run a cutter nozzle on the jetter where the intrusion is heavy enough to justify it.

  2. 2

    Scour the wall

Cutting alone leaves root stubs in the joint. Where we can, we follow with jetting so regrowth starts from clean pipe rather than from an established stub.

  3. 3

    Camera the whole run

The main root ball is rarely the only entry. We survey the full length and record every joint that roots are coming through.

  4. 4

    Give you the real options

Cutting on an interval, spot repair of the failed joint, or lining the run. We price what applies and tell you what we would do.

Pricing

Quoted per job after the camera pass, with the repair option priced alongside the cutting option.

Sewer Line Root Removal — FAQs

Still have questions? We're happy to talk it through.

+ Which trees cause the most sewer damage in California?
In Southern California the Indian laurel fig, widely planted as a parkway and street tree, is the worst offender we see. Eucalyptus is close behind and is found statewide. California pepper, liquidambar, jacaranda, magnolia and willow all turn up regularly in camera footage.
+ The city planted the tree. Do they pay for my pipe?
In Los Angeles, generally no. The city does not maintain or reimburse private laterals damaged by parkway trees, and several other California cities take the same position. Check with your own city, but do not assume the cost falls to them.
+ Can I just use a root-killing chemical down the toilet?
Foaming root treatments can slow regrowth inside the pipe and are sometimes worth using between cuts. They will not clear an established mass, and they do not close the joint the roots entered through. Treat them as a way of stretching an interval, not as a repair.
+ Will cutting the roots kill my tree?
No. We are cutting the fine roots that have grown inside the pipe, which is a small fraction of the root system. Removing the tree is a separate decision and often not necessary if the pipe itself is repaired.
+ How often will I need this done?
California has no real dormant season, so regrowth is faster here than in colder states. With an aggressive species close to the line, 12 to 24 months is realistic. We will give you a figure for your line after we have seen it.
