Poway calls itself the City in the Country and the description has practical consequences for sewer work. Lots here are large, many of them semi-rural and equestrian, which means laterals are frequently much longer than in a conventional suburb. A long run has more joints, more opportunity for grade to be lost somewhere along it, and more distance for a camera to cover before anything useful can be said. It also means that when a defect is found, locating it accurately on the surface matters far more, because the difference between digging in the right place and the wrong place is measured in tens of feet rather than feet.
The ground is granitic, weathered from the rock of the Peninsular Ranges into gritty decomposed granite, with outcrops and boulders common. That means two things. Granular ground does not go through the severe shrink and swell cycle of dense clay, so joint separation from soil movement is less aggressive here. But free-draining granular soil allows bedding washout, where water tracking alongside a pipe carries fines out from beneath it and the pipe sags into a belly without any ground settlement at all. And rock in the trench makes excavation slow and expensive.
This area has a serious wildfire history, with major fires having burned through the surrounding country within living memory. Burned slopes become water-repellent and shed runoff and sediment far more readily, and post-fire erosion and debris flow can scour, expose or load buried utilities on the hillside margins.
Most of the city was built from the 1960s through the 1980s, so laterals are largely later clay and plastic, and the diagnostic questions are usually about grade, run length and locating rather than material decay.
