Pomona has one of the larger stocks of genuinely old housing in the eastern Los Angeles basin. The historic districts, Lincoln Park and Hacienda Park among them, hold properties from the 1880s through the 1920s, and the laterals beneath them are cast iron and early vitrified clay, in many cases original to the house. A century or more in the ground is a long service life for any pipe material, and these are at the end of it.
The water here is hard, drawn from mineral-rich local groundwater in the Pomona Valley together with imported supply, and that has a direct effect inside old cast iron. Mineral scale and corrosion tubercles build on the pipe wall year after year until a four-inch bore is carrying a fraction of its original diameter, with a rough snagging surface that catches everything passing through. The household symptom is not a dramatic backup but a whole house that drains slowly and has got worse by the decade, with brief improvement each time somebody cables it.
Descaling with chain knockers is the answer where sound iron remains behind the crust, and the camera survey is the only honest way to establish whether it does. On a pipe where the scale is effectively holding a perforated wall together, taking it off opens holes, and we will tell you that rather than take the work and own the consequence.
Around the historic core the city expanded through the mid-century with conventional tract housing on clay and some Orangeburg, failing at the joints under the annual soil cycle, and the mature trees along those older streets are prolific root sources once a joint has opened. Cal Poly Pomona and the Fairplex area add multi-unit and commercial work.

Main Sewer Line Cleaning in Pomona — Local Notes
- •Lincoln Park and Hacienda Park historic districts hold 1880s to 1920s housing on original cast iron and early clay
- •Hard Pomona Valley groundwater and imported supply build heavy mineral scale inside old cast iron
- •Scaled cast iron presents as whole-house slow drainage worsening over decades, not a sudden blockage
- •Descaling only makes sense where sound iron remains, which the camera survey establishes first
- •Mid-century tracts around the core carry clay and some Orangeburg with mature street trees supplying roots
