North Hollywood developed earlier than most of the San Fernando Valley, with residential streets going back to the 1920s, and that gives it a wider spread of pipe materials than the purely postwar Valley communities. Cast iron and early vitrified clay run under the older blocks; mid-century clay and Orangeburg run under the tracts that filled in from the late 1940s onward. The two fail in completely different ways and need completely different answers.
Cast iron that age narrows rather than blocks. Corrosion tubercles and mineral scale accumulate on the inside wall year after year until a four-inch bore is carrying perhaps two inches of rough, snagging surface. The household experience is slow drainage across every fixture, worsening over a decade, with brief improvement each time a cable is run. Descaling with a chain knocker restores the bore where there is sound iron remaining behind the crust, and a camera survey is the only honest way to establish whether there is.
The mid-century clay fails at the joints. Southern California's long rainless summer desiccates the soil, which contracts away from the pipe; the winter storms then saturate it within days. A rigid jointed pipe absorbs that at the bells, and after seventy years the bells are open. Roots from the mature canopy through these streets then find the moisture.
The arts district and the commercial corridors along Lankershim and Magnolia add a share of food-premises and multi-unit work, where grease and shared-lateral questions take over from anything structural.
