Hayward is the city the Hayward Fault is named for, and nowhere in California is the effect of fault creep on buried infrastructure easier to demonstrate. This fault does not simply stay locked between earthquakes. It slips slowly and continuously, and in Hayward that creep is visible at the surface, steadily offsetting curbs, sidewalks and structures along the trace. The old city hall was damaged so persistently by the fault moving through it that the building had to be abandoned. A structure cannot be built rigid across ground that is deforming every year, and the same is true of a sewer lateral.

The housing spans the older downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods from the 1900s through the 1930s on cast iron and early clay, substantial postwar expansion on mid-century clay with some Orangeburg, and newer development on plastic.
