Anaheim covers more sewer ground than almost any city in the county, because it contains three completely different environments. The Anaheim Colony historic district, laid out by German wine-growing colonists in the 1850s, holds housing from the 1880s through the 1920s on original cast iron and the earliest vitrified clay. Those laterals are a century or more old and they fail by closing in: corrosion crust and mineral scale narrowing the bore until the whole house drains slowly.
Then there is the postwar city, the enormous expansion that followed the resort's opening in the mid-1950s and filled the flats with tract housing through the 1960s. Standard Southern California clay story: bell joints every few feet, worked apart by the long dry season and the winter storm saturation, roots entering at the openings. That accounts for the largest share of our residential work in the city.
Anaheim Hills is different again. Built from the 1970s onward into the Santa Ana Mountains foothills, it has newer pipe but sloping lots, deeper laterals and expansive clay on grade. Hillside ground creep shears laterals rather than pulling joints apart, and a defect on a steep lot sits deeper, so excavation costs more. We locate depth before quoting anything there as a matter of course.
The resort and stadium district adds a dense commercial load, hotels and food premises on shared and large-diameter lines where grease and interceptor capacity are the recurring issues rather than anything structural.
