What Main Sewer Line Cleaning Costs in California, and Why the Same Job Varies by Hundreds
Nobody enjoys asking what a sewer job costs, partly because the honest answer always starts with a range. But the ranges are reasonably predictable, and the things that move a price within them are knowable rather than mysterious. Here is how it works in California.
The typical ranges
A straightforward cable clearance of a main line from an accessible cleanout generally runs $150 to $350 in business hours. After hours, weekends and holidays push that to roughly $250 to $550, because somebody is getting out of bed. A camera survey is usually $175 to $350 on its own, or $275 to $500 with sonde locating that marks the defect position and depth on the surface.
Hydro jetting a residential lateral runs about $400 to $750, rising to $550 to $1,100 where a root-cutting head and extended working time are needed. Cast iron descaling is the big one, typically $850 to $2,200 and up to $3,800 where the scale is heavy enough to need multiple passes. Commercial work is quoted per site, with kitchen lateral jetting commonly $650 to $1,800 per visit.
Access is the biggest swing on a simple job
If you have an accessible cleanout, we work from it and the job is quick. If you do not, we clear through a pulled ground-floor toilet, which adds labour. If you have no cleanout at all it is usually worth installing one, at $450 to $1,400 depending on depth and surface, because it makes this and every future visit faster and cheaper.
Ground conditions, which vary more in California than almost anywhere
This is where the state gets expensive. Fresno and the valley floor carry cemented hardpan that generally has to be broken rather than dug, and it tends to sit at about the depth a lateral runs. Rancho Cucamonga sits on a cobbly debris-flow fan off Cucamonga Canyon. La Mesa and parts of San Diego County have rock near surface. The Antelope Valley and High Desert have caliche. Bay margin ground in Oakland, Alameda and along the Peninsula is soft and saturated and frequently needs dewatering and sometimes shoring. The same six-foot excavation can differ by a factor of two or three between those settings.
Depth, labour and permits
Hillside lots in Laguna Niguel, La Jolla, the Berkeley and Oakland hills, Diamond Bar or Glendale's Verdugo foothills carry laterals running well below grade to reach mains at different elevations. A deeper trench is bigger, slower and sometimes needs shoring, which is why we locate depth before quoting rather than after. Occasionally the news is good, because the defect turns out to be shallower or nearer the house than expected. On top of that, Bay Area and coastal city labour runs higher than the Central Valley for identical work, and permit requirements and fees for excavation in the public right of way vary considerably between jurisdictions.
Pipe material
Not a cost factor so much as a gate. Sound clay and cast iron take jetting. Orangeburg takes neither jetting nor lining, so if the camera finds it the conversation moves from cleaning to replacement and the numbers change entirely. In the postwar tract cities, Lakewood, the San Fernando Valley, Downey, Norwalk, West Covina and Buena Park among them, that possibility is real enough that nobody should quote a jetting job on a mid-century house without looking first.
Why we will not quote a repair over the phone
We will quote a callout and a clearance over the phone, because those are reasonably standard. We will not quote a repair, and the reason is not evasiveness. A repair price depends on the pipe material, the defect type, its position and its depth, and three of those four are invisible from the surface. A contractor who gives you a repair figure from a description is either padding it heavily to cover the worst case or will revise it upward once work starts. Neither serves you.
Where the real money is saved
Not in shopping around for the cheapest cable clearance. It is in not paying for the same clearance repeatedly. A household clearing the same blockage twice a year for six years has spent more than a spot repair would have cost and still has the original defect. If a line has blocked more than once at the same point, the recurrence is telling you something structural is there, usually a belly holding solids, an offset joint catching them, or roots at a single opened joint.
One camera survey identifies which, and in a good number of cases a short repair ends the cycle permanently. That is the one piece of cost advice worth more than any price list: pay once to find out what is actually wrong, rather than repeatedly to make the symptom go away.
What you should expect from us
A quoted callout before we dispatch, an exact written quote before any repair work begins, the camera footage, and a written list of defects by distance down the line. If the honest answer is that you need a straightforward cable clearance rather than anything larger, that is what we will tell you. Call (866) 811-8305, 24 hours a day.
